Microsoft Office 2007 Upgrade
With the latest release of Microsoft's Office Suite (Office 2007), the University of Connecticut is faced with many challenges in regards to file sharing and backwards compatibility. As the usage of Office 2007 increases, staff and students using older versions of Office may no longer have access to files and databases created in the new version. In order to adequately support students and staff, the Division of Student Affairs needs to update employee computers with the latest version of this software. Starting in October 2008, SAIT will be upgrading all Division computers to Microsoft Office 2007. The goal of the Office 2007 Upgrade Project is to 1) successfully upgrade all Division of Student Affairs computers to Microsoft Office 2007 by January 2009, and 2) convert existing Microsoft Access databases to the new Access file format. When Will My Department Be Upgraded?Listed below is the tentative upgrade schedule. This is subject to change, but SAIT will do everything possible to adhere to this schedule.
What Will Happen During the Upgrade Week? For each department, SAIT will follow this plan to roll out the software:
Microsoft Access DatabasesAccess databases present special problems because of significant security and functionality changes made to the program in Access 2003 and Access 2007. Most or all Division Access databases are still using the Access 2000 file format. The Office 2007 upgrade will not change this—so SAIT does not anticipate any problems with Access databases because of the upgrade. After the upgrade, SAIT will review, test, and convert Access databases to the Access 2007 file format. Each database will be handled individually and SAIT staff will work closely with departmental database users to insure that no features or data are lost.
